Busselton Christian Brethren Camp

The Busselton Christian Brethren Campsite has long been a favourite getaway spot for Perth families and small groups. The site is basic which definitely adds to its charm and relaxing atmosphere. Plenty of shade and a safe beach at the sites back fence means families come back year after year. Bookings are for individual tent or caravan sites at all times of the year, plus small groups up to 60 persons with use of the kitchen and dorms etc... There is a boat launching ramp close by for the fisherperson and jet skier, and you have all the South-West has to offer in easy reach for day trips. Nestled in Geographe Bay, Busselton has been a popular holiday spot for West Australians since the 1890s. Beautiful beaches, excellent fishing, caves, coastline scenery, unspoiled bushland surrounds are all in close proximity. Busselton is one of West Australia's earliest settlements. The Busselton Jetty Underwater Observatory 2 kms from shore is a simply massive fish bowl, with a wide staircase covering three levels, down to a depth of some 8 metres below sea level.

A brief history of the Busselton Christian Brethren Campsite - It was all hands on deck in 1970. A local farmer rattled in from 20 miles away on his trusty tractor and ploughed a track through the undergrowth to make a driveway into the newly leased bush block. A site was cleared and the old Osmington School building was eased through the Peppy trees and onto the stumps. Then began the Saturday tradition, where local and visiting brothers & sisters in Christ would roll up their sleeves and just get on with it! The building was repaired and painted and prettied up. BBQs and picnics were the only option for keeping the gang fed, but everyone loved that, especially all the kids ...a big feed then a swim, what more could you ask for. Cement bricks were hand made, then used to build the ablution block. A well, 2 metres square x 4 metres deep was hand dug and boarded to supply fresh water, and a home for enormous frogs that sent children screaming when they dropped from their hiding spot under the toilet seat! During the cooler months, when the burning season began, there would be little fires blazing away that needed regular stoking. As we all know a deadline is a wonderful motivator to getting tasks finished, and what better motivation could there be than a wedding!. In February 1971 Shirley Smith was married to Les Saxey in the very hall that they and others had so diligently worked on. What a grand occasion with which to christen the little chapel. From this time on more buildings were acquired and transported onto site by jinker, made possible by the generous hand of Len Ravenscroft, owner of Leonards Jinker Service, who gifted machinery, tools and workers to make this possible. The Dining Room/Kitchen was formerly a Dental Clinic on the MHAS Leeuwin Barracks, Perth. The first dormitory was from the Railway Siding in Tutunup, and the second dormitory building came from the Immigration Centre in Bicton. A new bore was drilled. A few years later a generous gift to the campsite enabled the acquisition of a caretakers home, and the construction of a second ablution block. And so it has continued for the last 40 or so years, willing hands and generous hearts have enabled the campsite to offer a quiet retreat by the beach in one of WA’s most desirable destinations.

Latest News - from the printed IHS Newsletter Oct/Nov 2011

It has been a very busy time at the (Busselton) campsite. Many wonderful people have worked tirelessly over many weekdays and weekends, over many months, to ensure that all the Shire and Health requirements and upgrades for 'Stage one' are met. The Busselton Shire council has met and approved the lease application for 172 Caves Road, Vasse, for the next 21 years. What a blessing! The old ablution blocks have been demolished and the older storage buildings removed. Chainsaws and mowers have been roaring away. All the major electrical and water upgrades are near completion. TRADE HIRE Busselton lent us 2 mini excavators for 3 full days for no charge. A very generous Perth brother supplied all the PVC pipe and connections for throughout the whole caravan park. We have also had the blessing of a local electrician Travis Sturk-Ralls completing all the electrical upgrade. Travis has no connection with any church and he is doing all the work for free. A job that in real terms would cost approx. $50,000 has been effectively halved in cost. We all find this very humbling and are convinced that the Lord's hand is in this... We are also very thankful to Ian and Lyn Clements for Ian's help working alongside Travis and for Lyn for feeding them! We also are thankful to a number of Sisters in Christ for their gift that is funding the upgrade of all the sumps in the caravan park. We trust that all the caravanning and camping enthusiasts among you will consider a trip to the beautiful South West, and to the campsite, as the site will need to sustain itself cost-wise. With the lease secured, our caretakers Ray and Audrey can now take bookings for he coming holiday season. Come down and see all the work that has been done. We still have a long way to go, and would be very grateful for future help - through physical work, monetary donation or prayer. Phil Ashton.

  CAMPING PROGRAMS

SCRIPTURE UNION Western Australia has long been an international leader in running camping and mission programs for young people and children. Each year, SU runs more than 50 camps including sailing, abseiling, white water rafting, hiking, AFL, soccer and even a performing arts camp. SU is recognised both within and outside the camping industry as a field leader, receiving multiple awards from the WA government for their risk management practices. A hallmark of SU's ministries worldwide is a commitment to working in partnership with local churches. One element of this partnership is seen in WA Secondary and Primary Schools, where SU Western Australia runs lunchtime and after school clubs for students. In addition to clubs, Scripture Union Western Australia works in partnership with local schools to offer Adventure Camping programs and Creative Arts programs. Each year SU WA will work with over 40,000 students in over 100 WA schools. Christian volunteers are alway needed, so contact SU if you have a heart to see young people reached with the love of Christ.
